Servo Amplifier Sizing & Tools

Getting Started

Varedan wants to make it easy to successfully size and select the right amplifier for your application.  Below are a series of tools, application notes and tutorials aimed at simplifying an inherently complicated process.  If you are not familiar with the process, a great place to start is on our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Step 1: Understanding your motion profile

The first step in sizing and designing a high-performance motion control system is to generate a motion profile for the load that you want to control.  For your assistance with your calculations we have provided you with our, “Smart Motion Cheat Sheet.” The motion profile shows the relationships between time, position, velocity and acceleration of the load.

Linear Amplifier Sizing

Step 2: Calculating Peak and Continuous Power

Calculating the peak and continuous power dissipation in a linear amplifier is non-intuitive.  To assist you we have Application Notes, tutorial videos and sizing spreadsheets for the four most popular motor types, (linear brushless, rotary brushless, rotary brush-type, and voice-coil).  The tools in the section below will help you calculate the values needed to size and select an appropriate amplifier.
